The Creation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Summary: This paper charts the evolution of the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights (the
UDHR) since its creation in 1948.

This web page charts the evolution of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights (the UDHR) since its creation in 1948. The Declaration has come to
be regarded as possibly the single most document created in the
twentieth
century and as the internationally accepted standard for human rights.

The author takes a chronological approach: the first section describes the
circumstances and actors involved in producing the document. This is
followed by an analysis and assessment of the Declaration’s content. The
paper concludes with a discussion of the influence of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights on national constitutions and in shaping
international law.
