On 17 May 2007, the first members of the Human Rights Council were elected. The Council consists of 47 members divided over five regional groups. Each member serves a three year term. At present the following States hold a seat in the Council: African States (13 out of 47 seats) Term expiring in 2008: Gabon - Ghana - Mali - Zambia Term expiring in 2009: Cameroon - Djibouti - Mauritius - Nigeria - Senegal Term expiring in 2010: Madagascar - South Africa - Angola - Egypt Term expiring in 2008: Japan - Pakistan -Republic of Korea - Sri Lanka Term expiring in 2009: Bangladesh - China - Jordan - Malaysia - Saudi Arabia Term expiring in 2010: India - Indonesia - the Philippines - Qatar Term expiring in 2008: Romania - Ukraine Term expiring in 2009: Azerbaijan - Russian Federation Term expiring in 2010: Slovenia - Bosnia and Herzegovina Term expiring in 2008: Brazil - Guatemala - Peru Term expiring in 2009: Cuba - Mexico - Uruguay Term expiring in 2010: Bolivia - Nicaragua Western European and Other States (7 out of 47 seats) Term expiring in 2008: France - United Kingdom Term expiring in 2009: Canada - Germany - Switzerland Term expiring in 2010: the Netherlands - Italy
