On-Line Discussion on Child Rights

Summary: A discussion forum on the rights of the child,
themed: ‘How can governments best promote their
commitments to the protection of the rights of
children from violence, abuse and neglect?’
To commemorate the International Day of the Child and the 15th anniversary of
the adoption of the Convention of the Rights of the Child, OneWorld Africa (OWA)
in conjunction with Resources Aimed at the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect
(RAPCAN) will hold a discussion forum on the rights of the child, themed: ‘How
can governments best promote their commitments to the protection of the rights
of children from violence, abuse and neglect?’

The on-line discussion will take place from 1 November to 1 December 2004. It
aims at evaluating the existing policies that governments have towards the
protection of children’s rights and at examining and exploring suggestions and
contributions on how governments can best protect the rights of children by
implementing policies and structures that have children’s best interest at heart.

The end of the discussion aims to be a platform from which policy makers and
advocates can draw experiences or conclusions that can help in the formulation
of National children’s policies, policies that will help in the protection of
children from violence, abuse, and neglect.

Child rights professionals' participation in this forum is crucial as it is what
they will contribute that will determine the kinds of policies that will exist
in their countries. The more we share experiences about the policies that exist
in developing countries and how they help in the preservation of child rights,
the more we are likely to ensure that we are moving in the right direction
towards the upholding of children’s rights.

The discussion will be moderated by child rights activist, Carol Bower,
executive director of RAPCAN. To subscribe, visit href='http://www.dgroups.org/groups/childrights'>the child rights forum on
