Human Rights Council Membership

On May 2006, the first members of the Human Rights Council were elected. The Council consists of 47 members divided over 5 regional groups. Each member serves a three year term. At present the following States hold a seat in the Council:

African States (13 out of 47 seats)

Term expiring in 2007: Algeria - Morocco - South Africa - Tunisia

Term expiring in 2008: Gabon - Ghana - Mali - Zambia

Term expiring in 2009: Cameroon - Djibouti - Mauritius - Nigeria - Senegal


Asian States

Term expiring in 2007: Bahrain - India - Indonesia - Philippines

Term expiring in 2008: Japan - Pakistan -Republic of Korea - Sri Lanka

Term expiring in 2009: Bangladesh - China - Jordan - Malaysia - Saudi Arabia

(6 out of 47 seats)

Term expiring in 2007: Czech Republic - Poland

Term expiring in 2008: Romania - Ukraine

Term expiring in 2009: Azerbaijan - Russian Federation


Latin American & Caribbean States
(8 out of 47 seats)
