Summary: Day 2: Children present their views on what forms of violence they suffer in institutions, and their recommendations to delegates.Two children from Sudan and Tunisia explained what forms of violence occur in institutions, their recommendations for ending this violence, and how they plan to take part in this process. Forms of violence identified: - Physical violence, such as using children for hard work, which can result in permanent infirmity, - Children are put under pressure to work during breaks, they face disease, allergies, chest infections, torture, detention - Child is exposed to all sorts of violent acts such as pulling out nails, stand in the sun for long periods for time - Sexual abuse, harassment, exploiting bodies, forced to expose parts of their bodies, prostitution, rape - Psychological violence: humiliation, exclusion, marginalisation, undermining their opinions, lack of compassion, mercy - Deprived of family visits if they don’t comply The Recommendations they hope will be taken on by delegates include: - Forming panel of observers monitoring practices in institutions - Establish basic education within institutions - Promulgation of legislation abolishing all forms of violence - Prohibit child labour within institutions - Supervisors and teachers should be highly qualified - Organise training courses for staff - Develop profiles for children to follow up cases - Try to hold interview for fact finding purposes - Publish bulletins underlining needs for appropriate needs Children plan to play a part in ending violence by: - Organising recreational trips for children in institutions - Collecting donations and presents for them - Trying to discuss issues with officials - Establish funds for them - Forming a committee to support those children, involving them as well.
