The document is in four parts (in pdf): This study is the result of strong cooperation amongst community organizations, researchers, practitioners and, most importantly, youth organizations to investigate the nature and extent of sexual violence against young people in conflict and post-conflict situations. The results, as provided in this publication, combine quantitative and qualitative data through quotes, statistics, artwork and interviews. Vicious Circles examines the strategic use of sexual violence in today’s wars and its impact on young people. It describes how youth are a prized resource in conflicts where forms of sexual violence are carefully chosen, planned and executed to achieve military objectives. It shows the link between war-related violations and civilian life, revealing the overlap between these two worlds which are increasingly merged. There has been an explosion of sexual violence in today’s wars. In order to combat these violations, we must increase our understanding of how and why they are taking place. This knowledge should increase our capacity to act effectively, to provide better protection and more useful rehabilitation assistance. Yes, sexual violence has always existed but no, not in the numbers and at the level of brutality that we are seeing today. And, no, it is not acceptable. Children/Youth as Peacebuilders (CAP) contributes to this work. CAP’s mandate is to support the rights of children and youth living in conflict and early post-conflict situations. This includes the active participation of young people in the definition of their realities in ways that inform both their lives and the policies and programs of national and international agencies.
