events impacting the lives of
indigenous young people.
2ND INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON INDIGENOUS
CHILDREN AND YOUTH
The Second International Workshop on Indigenous Children and
Youth was held 19-20 July 2001 at the Palais des Nations in
Geneva. The purpose of the meeting was to ensure that
indigenous people are informed about current international
events impacting the lives of indigenous young people. The
Workshop was sponsored by ChildRights International Research
Institute, the CORE Network on Indigenous Children and the
Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (USA).
Topics covered at the one and a half day event included
discussions of the possible effects on indigenous children of: 1)
the upcoming United Nations General Assembly Special Session
on Children (UNGASS) to be held in New York on September 19-
21, 2001; 2) the Second World Congress Against Sexual
Exploitation of Children; 3) the Third World Conference Against
Racism; 4) the Optional Protocol on Children and War; 4) the
newly established Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues; and
5) the Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights and Fundamental
Freedoms of Indigenous Peoples.
Participants in the Workshop adopted a number of
recommendations that were approved by the Indigenous Caucus
and the Working Group on Indigenous Populations. One of these
was a call for establishment of a World Coalition for Indigenous
Children and Youth.
Among the immediate goals of the Coalition would be:
* To build an ongoing network of communication among
indigenous peoples’ organizations and institutions, and their
supporters, who are working on matters concerning indigenous
children and youth.
* To facilitate the organization of the Third International
Workshop on Indigenous Children and Youth in July 2002.
* To ensure that the Special Rapporteur and Permanent Forum
give prominence to matters concerning indigenous children and
youth.
* To support the inclusion of indigenous issues in all United
Nations related international events and to promote and secure
the full participation of indigenous peoples and in particular
indigenous youths in these processes.
