World Vision UK briefing paper No 4
The UN estimates that around 4 million people a year are now
traded against their will to work in some form of slavery - many of
these are children, in South East Asia, many are girls who are
trafficked for the purposes of prostitution.
This briefing shows that, inspite of the increasing number of
children involved, there have been encouraging signs that steps
are being taken to tackle the problem. There has clearly been
progress made, most notably at the national level where many
countries seem to be implementing measures to address some of
the issues involved. It argues, however, that action is urgently
needed on two fronts: 1. to address the cross border issues, an
area in which progress has, to date, been less marked and; 2 to
achieve greater consistency in responses at the national level.
