Artists United 4 Childrewn and Youth Development (AUCAYD)

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
-Create a platform for young people to learn, share and interact with their peers, through Arts, Culture and Media-Technology.

-Using Information Communication Technology (ICT) as a way of bridging the digital divide.

-To discover, empower and promote the talents of young people for self reliance, economic growth, sustainable peace and development.

It is an indisputable fact that after the decade long civil war in Sierra Leone, those that received the blunt aspect of atrocities are mostly young people (youths and children). The intention of learning the past is not a bad one, but the challenging aspect of it is how to forget the past and confront the future. To this end positive social transformation is much needed tool for the sustainable growth and development of young people across the country.

In a country overcoming years of civil war and violence, Sierra Leone’s “forgotten generation” is demanding positive change. With unrivalled enthusiasm, Artists United for Children and Youth Development (AUCAYD) a Non-political, Non-governmental and Non-profit making organization registered with the Ministry of Education Youths and Sports (MYES), the Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children Affairs (MSWGCA) and t Freetown City Council (FCC), established in 2007 by a young Sierra Leonean, Mohamed Samba Kamara (Luxsonjay). AUCAYD is using “edutainment” to help the young people in Sierra Leone overcome painful histories and rebuild their lives and communities. It is not an easy voyage, opportunity is scarce in one of the most impoverished countries in the world, and the physical and psychological effects of war still linger. The future of Freetown is in the hands of its young people, and AUCAYD team is proving to the world that AUCAYD is up to the challenge.

It is as a result of this fact that War Child Canada (WCC) a registered Canadian independent, international Non-governmental, charity (reg. # 872374426RR0001) organization founded in 1999; working globally with young people to provide support and capacity building for youth and children, to overcome the trauma of war and rebuilds their lives; has consented to support AUCAYD on a project title: Promoting peace through capacity building.
The main purpose of the project is to increase Information Technology (IT) knowledge; Production of Movies and Music; and to impact technical skills and building the capacity of its members. The project which is on its implementation of phase two (2) in Sierra Leone started in May 2010 and it is expected to end by April 2011.

War Child Canada (WCC) has had a working relationship with the group, Artists United for Children and Youth Development (AUCAYD) for the past two years and the founding member since 2005. This group of young adults works towards informing communities primarily in Freetown, Sierra Leone, about the rights of children and youth via music, dance, drama, and radio sensitization. AUCAYD has been responsible for some highly innovative local partnerships while using extremely limited resources and tools.
