TURKEY: Young people outline expectations for new constitution

Summary: Young people from all across Turkey joined the workshop to share their thoughts on children's rights and how to best incorporate their vision in the new Constitution.

[2 February 2012] - Young people from around the country on Thursday presented their vision for the new Constitution to Parliament Speaker Cemil Çiçek, according to the Cihan news agency.

Çiçek accepted the constitutional proposal from young representatives of the Provincial Children's Rights Committee that was presented during a workshop on integrating the voices of Turkey's young people during Turkey's process of drafting a new Constitution.

“I hope the Constitution will be successful,” said Çiçek, expressing his satisfaction with the children's proposal and thanking them for their efforts.

United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF) official and Family and Social Policy Minister Fatma Şahin joined the two-day workshop that concluded on Thursday in Ankara.

“We want to hit the mark in protecting children's rights in the new Constitution,” Şahin said on Friday. According to Şahin, 162 children from 81 districts participated in the workshop.

Young people from all across Turkey joined the workshop to share their thoughts on children's rights and how to best incorporate their vision in the new Constitution.

“What you have to say here is very important for us,” Şahin said at the start of the workshop on Wednesday. “The era of speaking on your behalf is over.”

“In terms of constitutional change, I think children rights are being defended, but this needs to be taken up a gear,” Fatih Kazdan from Rize said at the workshop.

“It is a very good idea to ask us about children's rights. Because if you're working on something related to the law, you may consult lawyers. If you working on something related to the economy, you may consult economists. So young people should definitely be consulted on items related to children's rights. Because children are the future,” Kazdan said.

Nuriye İnsan from Kütahya said: “I am very happy to be here. It is very nice that our views are being taken into consideration in the new constitution. It is very important for Turkey to consider these thoughts.”
