IRAQ: Iraqi Children's Parliament calling for lifting the ban on opening private orphanages

[6 September 2010] - The Iraqi children's parliament is calling for the ban on private orphanages to be lifted.

In Iraq, only the State can open orphanages in accordance with a decision by the Council of Ministers made in 2006, Cinderella al-Shakarchi, head of the country's parliament, told newspaper Azzaman.

Ms al-Shakarchi called for this decision to be quashed and for the creation of a supervisory body which would monitor orphanages set up by private institutions and NGOs and oversee children's interests.
