The solution

We are calling for transparency, accountability and redress for the victims of sexual abuse by peacekeepers in Central African Republic (CAR).

However, due to the complexity of the UN, especially its peacekeeping structures, it can be difficult for non-governmental organisations and states to know how to advocate for change in this field. CRIN has been asked by NGOs and some governments to explore what could be done now, and how. As such, we have produced a number of important resources to facilitate engagement with this issue.

CRIN made a submission to the Independent Review Panel appointed by the Secretary-General to review the response of the UN to allegations of sexual exploitation by peacekeepers in Central African Republic outlining our concerns and recommendations.

CRIN produced an advocacy guide examining 10 ‘next step’ recommendations that can be taken, each of which would help to safeguard children and other civilians in the long-term. It suggests how to pursue these recommendations and whom to partner with.

We have put together a detailed timeline of how events unfolded, who knew about the abuse, and what actions were taken, in order to ensure transparency, accountability and redress.

CRIN has also encouraged children's rights advocates to sign and share an open letter to the UN Secretary-General with a number of important recommendations for improving the UN's response to the sexual abuse allegations facing the UN mandated peacekeepers in CAR.
