WATER AND TOXICS: CRIN's submission to SR on water and sanitation

This submission constitutes CRIN's contribution to the report of the Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation on the subject of regulation of water and sanitation services in the context of realisation of human rights.

It focuses on the issue of contamination of water by toxics and its impacts on children’s rights. Water is a major source of exposure to toxic chemicals and pollutants, in poor and wealthy countries. Childhood exposure to contaminated water involves numerous rights violations, including of the right to life, survival and development, the right to health, the right to an adequate standard of living and a healthy environment. Securing the right of children to safe drinking water is a challenge that regulatory frameworks must meet and where rights are violated, they must provide children with the means of getting redress.
