UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in the United Arab Emirates that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson

In its Concluding Observations of 2002, the Committee on the Rights of the Child expressed concern at the absence of an independent mechanism with the mandate to regularly monitor and evaluate the progress in the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The Committee urged the State to establish an independent national human rights institution to monitor and evaluate progress in implementing the CRC at the national and local levels, and to ensure that the institution was accessible to children and empowered to receive and investigate complaints of violations of children's rights.

The Federal National Council (FNC) approved the setting up of a permanent committee on human rights in the United Arab Emirates in 2013, to discuss human rights issues in relation to legislation. The mechanism is yet to be reviewed by the Committee on the Rights of the Child for conformity with the CRC.
