SYRIAN ARAB REPUBLIC: Access to justice for children

This report is part of CRIN's access to justice for children project, looking at the status of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in national law, the status of children involved in legal proceedings, the legal means to challenge violations of children’s rights and the practical considerations involved in challenging violations.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) has been ratified by Legislative Act No. 8 of 13 June 1993 in the Syrian arab Republic, coming into force on 14 August 1993. As such, the CRC has force of law, although it would appear that it merely supplements domestic legislation before national courts. The age of majority in Syria is 18 and children under this age are permitted to bring actions before national courts to challenge violations of their rights but must do so through a parent or legal guardian.
