Children's Ombudsperson

The National Human Rights Commission was established in 1999, and is empowered to investigate complaints regarding the violation of children's rights. However, in its Concluding Observations of 2004, the Committee on the Rights of the Child raised concerns that the insufficient human and financial resourced “to deal effectively with its volume of work at the national and local levels”. The Committee recommended that the State ensure that the Commission is properly funded and resourced, and also urged the State to consider establishing a bureau of children's rights within the Commission in order to centralise its work on children's rights.
