ROMANIA: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in Romania that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson

In its 2009 Observations, the Committee on the Rights of the Child was critical of the Romanian Parliament's rejection of a draft bill aimed at establishing a Children's Ombudsperson. The Committee did, however, note the existence of an Ombudsperson empowered to receive and consider complaints from children, and the existence of a Deputy Ombudsperson with specific responsibilities in the area of child protection. The Committee expressed concerns, however, that the Ombudsperson was not in full conformity with the Paris Principles, was little known, and received very few complaints from or in relation to children.
