INFORMATION SHEET

REGIONAL CONSULTATION FOR LATIN AMERICA ON VIOLENCE AGAINST
CHILDREN
May 30 – 1 June 2005, Buenos Aires, Argentina

- The Regional Consultation for Latin America is part of a global series of
consultations designed to feed the latest national research, best practices
and recommendations for action into the the United Nations Study on
Violence. Nine consultations will be held in 2005, each organized by the
United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in collaboration with the Office of
the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the World
Health Organization.

- The objective of the Regional Consultation for Latin America is to ensure
that the Study accurately reflects regional realities of violence against
children. The Consultation will serve as a broad-based forum for debate
and information exchange among participants from Latin American states,
regional entities, international organisations, academic institutions, civil
society organisations, and children from throughout the region.

- Paulo Sergio Pinheiro is the independent expert appointed by the
Secretary-General to lead the Study on Violence Against Children and will
attend this Regional Consultation.

- Regional consultations have enormous potential to:
- influence public opinion and raise awareness of violence against children;
- encourage social mobilisation for the protection of children from violence;
- and strengthen existing child protection networks.

- A regional situation analysis will serve as the basis for discussion
throughout the consultation and for the final outcome document. The
situation analysis identifies national gaps and best practices in addressing
violence against children in the five settings addressed by the Study:
home/family, schools and educational settings, other institutional settings,
the community, and work situations.

- The consultation will be organized into several plenary sessions designed
for most of the participants, and parallel working groups regional experts
on violence. The expert working groups will analyse prevention policies;
programmes, resources, and services; restitution of rights and treatment
of victims; and research and monitoring systems.

- The Regional Consultation for Latin America is organised by UNICEF in
collaboration with the Government of Argentina, the Office of the United
Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Pan American Health
Organisation, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, and a
committee made up of regional NGOs created for this occasion.

- The Regional Consultation for Latin America is the second consultation of
its kind convened in the region. The Regional Consultation for the
Caribbean was held in Trinidad, March 9-11 in collaboration with CARICOM.
