Preventing Family Violence

Extract from the publication.

Many children are deeply scarred, both physically and mentally, not
just by what is done to them but by what they see done to others in
the very place that should offer them security and sanctuary: their
home. Family violence - often considered a private matter - is, in
fact, a very public tragedy on an international scale.

Violence in the family is a global issue requiring a global response
and that is why the International Save the Children Alliance have
decided to publish this manual for action.
- Preventing Family Violence examines the nature and impact of
different forms of family violence on children and provides
information on Alliance initiatives.
- Examples of good practice from across the world are offered,
describing some of the work that is being carried out with children,
families and communities, and a variety of approaches to tackling
this very sensitive issue.
- The case studies presented demonstrate that even in the most
culturally-sensitive areas, and where funds are limited, it is
possible to make an important difference.
- Suggested further reading and addresses provide sources of further
information.
- Finally, this practical manual offers a range of activities for
those who wish to develop or pursue similar work. These include
developing a deeper understanding of the different forms of violence,
of why and how violence occurs in the family, exploring the rights
that young people have, and developing strategies to turn these
rights into reality.Owner: Josephine Warrior
