PORTUGAL: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in Portugal that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson

Portugal has had an Ombudsperson (Provedoria de Justiça) since 1976, and the current Ombudsman operates under Decree law No. 279 of 1993 (as amended 2010). There is not a specific Ombudsperson for children, but there are staff within the office who deal specifically with children. Since 1993, the Ombudsperson has been able to receive complaints about minors who are at risk either submitted by children themselves or by adults on their behalf.
