Out of Sight... Out of Mind... Out of Reach: A study of child domestic workers in Chennai - India

OUT OF SIGHT... OUT OF MIND... OUT OF REACH... A STUDY OF
CHILD DOMESTIC WORKERS IN CHENNAI - INDIA
Anti-Slavery International and Arunodhaya, Centre for Street and
Working Children

Child Labour is the curse of our so-called modern societies.
Today, child labour has become an issue of global politics: while
the richer nations hypocritically link child labour with trade issues,
the developing nations tend to down play the magnitude and
cruelty of child labour in their countries. But the fact remains, as
this report says: "The concept and practice of child labour is
economically unsound, psychologically disastrous and morally
wrong". And it is indeed a painful reality that India has the
largest number of working children in the world.

Arunodhaya has been seriously involved locally in the city of
Chennai, but its range of programmes has been based on a
holistic vision and linked to wider and global efforts. The present
publication, the result of a collaboration between Arunodhaya
and the UK based Anti-slavery International, comes out due to
the same vision and effort.

The issue of Child Domestic workers is one of the more
dangerous forms of child labour, precisely because it is often
hidden and is rarely accepted as a cruelty on our children. There
is much material in the stusy, by way of findings and
recommendations for public policy and grassroots involvement.
