Summary: This report summarises hearings on children's rights in Nicaragua held by the Inter-American Commission, reports by the Commission's Rapporteur on the Rights of the Child, and cases brought to the Commission and Court.
Nicaragua is a member of the Organization of American States (OAS). The Inter-American Commission is an autonomous body of the OAS which monitors Member States' compliance with their obligations under regional human rights conventions. Among them, a report on the right to education of people with disabilities in November 2009. Read the report. In March 2007, a hearing was held on the general situation of human rights in Nicaragua. During the meeting, a group of national NGOs said that in recent years the country had been characterised by political crisis and disregard for human rights. Among other issues, they reported on the situation of children's rights, highlighting that more than 600,000 children were outside the education system; 32 per cent of children suffered chronic malnutrition, especially those who live on the Caribbean coast and in rural areas; and 30 per cent did not have a birth certificate, increasing their vulnerability to falling victim to human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. The Commission announced that it would send a delegation to Nicaragua later this year to discuss human rights issues with ministers of the new administration.
