NETHERLANDS: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in the Netherlands that monitor children's rights.

 Children's Ombudsperson

As of the State's 2008 report to the Committee on the Rights of the Child, a bill existed in draft form to create a Children's Ombudsperson within the office of the national ombudsperson. The Committee expressed concern, however, that at the time of the report there were no human rights institutions or ombudspersons for the Netherlands Antilles or Aruba. The Committee urged the State to expeditiously pass the children's ombudsperson legislation and to create similar bodies in the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. The Netherlands has since introduced a children's ombudsperson (de Kinderombudsman), but the body has not yet been examined by the Committee for compatibility with the Convention.
