of the national coalition.

The National Coalition of NGOs for the Convention on
the Rights of the Child in Tajikistan.

Background
Tajikistan is a mountainous country bounded by Kyrgyzstan in the
north, Uzbekistan in the west and China in the southeast,
Aphganistan in the southwest. The country has a population of
almost six million people most of whom live in rural areas. The
official language is Tajik followed by Uzek and Russian. Since the
collapse of the Soviet Union and the civil war the Tajikistan
economy has suffered enormously. The country’s situation
affects children in several ways, not least of all is the removal of
the social net which brought some protection for children.

History of the national coalition
The government of Tajikistan submitted its initial state report to
the Committee on the Rights of the Child. This important
development led several NGOs to collaborate in drafting an
Alternative Report. This exercise, along with participating in the
pre-sessional working group meeting of the Committee on the
Rights of the Child, encouraged the NGOs to form a permanent
child rights coalition.
The coalition comprises of eight NGOs/groups and six persons

Main purpose and activities - The national NGO coalition actively
promotes the realisation of the Convention on the Rights of the
Child, and also follows the recommendations, elaborated by the
Committee on the Rights of the Child.

Activities include:
- Creating and operating channels for receiving of the information
about new legal documents related the conditions of children and
juvenile throughout the world;
- Members of the national coalition participate in international
conferences; workshops dedicated to the work with children and
within the interests of children.
- Members of the national coalition regularly render consultative
assistance to local NGO-s, employees of government bodies,
citizens on issues of the legal protection of children.
- The coalition under the support of UNICEF conducted two
research projects about children living without parental care and
a study of the legislation on children-orphans. The title of the
study is “Children-orphans-problems of the survival”. With the
support of Save the Children UK the conditions of children who
are invalids in southern regions of the Republic of Tajikistan were
studied.
- In keeping with the recommendations of the Committee on the
Rights of the Child the coalition has been instrumental in setting
up two children juridical clinics rendering juridical, psychological
assistance to children. The clinic also serves people working with
children.
- The coalition conducted the number of TV and radio programmes
dedicated to the problems of children and also raising of
awareness of the population of the concluding observations and
the issues raised therein.
- The coalition is also associated with a program on the social
adaptation of children-invalids in rural regions, especially those
who suffered in the result of civil war in Tajikistan.
- Coalition members are also part of programme to conduct a
compilation and analysis of the information connected with the
infringement of regulations of the Convention on the Rights of the
Child.
