It has been recognized widely that all 17 Sustainable Development Goals are relevant for children but how do they correspond to the Convention on the Rights of the Child?
A new interactive tool developed by UNICEF shows the relevance of the Global Goals to the Convention and provides an opportunity to explore the links between the Convention articles and the 17 Goals and 169 targets. To reinforce the connections in both directions, the tool is divided into two sections: the first part identifies relevant Convention articles for each SDG and its targets; and the second part lists the Global Goals and targets for each CRC article. The reader can jump between goals and articles in a simple and user-friendly way.
This mapping adopts a deliberately broad interpretation of the Global Goals and the Convention, as illustrated by the following example: Global Goal 6, Target 1: by 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all. It corresponds not only to rights relating to discrimination and health, but also to CRC Articles 32 (child labour), 34 (sexual exploitation and abuse) and 36 (other forms of exploitation) in order to draw attention to the ways in which many children are put at risk when collecting drinking water from distant sources.
