MALAYSIA: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in Malaysia that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson

The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) was established in 1999 under the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia Act, and is tasked with awareness raising, carrying out training and analysing progress made on human rights issues, as well as receiving and investigating individual complaints relating to alleged human rights violations and conducting visits of places of detention. SUHAKAM monitors the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child through its working groups. The Committee has recommended, however, that the State ensure the sufficient funding of SUHAKAM and ensure that the body is easily accessible to children.
