Kimasomaso: BBC World Service Trust Swahili website on sexual and reproductive health issues for young people

Summary: Kimasomaso, which means "to speak out boldly" in Kiswahili, is a weekly radio series which explores sexual and reproductive health issues with and by young people. Funding has come from the Ford Foundation.

Issues that have been addressed include violence against women, the role of rap music in influencing young people's sexual attitudes and behaviour, same sex relationships and sexual pleasure.

The exciting website provides a means of listening again to the programme via an audio link which will refresh weekly as each new programme is produced.

It also provides access to some of the best audio diaries that have been made for the programme by young people.

For example, we can hear the experiences of 13-year-old pregnant teenager, or be taken through the process of having an HIV test, or instructed in the proper use of a condom… all in a very friendly, non-patronising way.

The site incorporates a glossary of information on sexual and reproductive health for young people.

Everything a young person needs to know about topics such as HIV/AIDS, puberty, physical changes, contraceptives, pregnancy, sex, homosexuality, masturbation. All presented in a young vibrant style with some cartoon illustrations by cartoonist TAYO.
