KENYA: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in Kenya that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson

In its 2007 Concluding Observations, the Committee on the Rights of the Child welcomed the creation of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, but expressed concern that the body had insufficient human and financial resources and that "[the] KNCHR does not place specific emphasis on the rights and needs of children in discharging its mandate". The Committee recommended that the State reform the KNCHR to ensure that it pays special attention to children, perhaps by establishing a children's rights unit with a child sensitive complaints mechanism.
