JARGON OF THE WEEK: **Data**

"Data" is a word that rarely appears in NGO papers on its own. Usually preceding it is an adjective that escorts it on a red carpet of praise which honours accurate data, credible data, sound data, reliable data, or the really really expressive good data. And in case these were not strong enough adjectives, a new kind of robust data has begun to creep into reports.

But data is a 400-year-old word with lots of experience, so it’s about time we let it stand on its own in a sentence. After all, what’s the difference between saying "there is a lack of good data on the prevalence of child labour" or "there is a lack of data on the prevalence of child labour"?
