Summary: Information about institutions in Japan that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson

As of April 2008, Japan had no independent national mechanism to monitor the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child at the national level. Five municipalities had appointed ombudspersons for children, but reports to the Committee on the Rights of the Child were vague about the mandate, independence, functions and resources of these bodies. The Committee urged the state to develop a National Human Rights Commission compliant with the Paris Principles.
