Iceland is a member of the Council of Europe and subject to the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights, which issues decisions that are binding on all Council of Europe members. The Court maintains a searchable database of its case law, and the Council of Europe's Theseus project also offers a database containing Court case law relevant to children's rights.

One case brought and admitted against Iceland involving children's issues concerns the case of a child suffering from physical and mental handicap attributable, according to the parents, to inappropriate medical treatment during childbirth.
