HUNGARY: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in Hungary that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudspersons

The Parliamentary Commissioners for Civil Rights and Ethnic and National Minorities are empowered to investigate abuses infringing the constitutional rights of the child, and report annually to Parliament on their findings. However, the Committee on the Rights of the Child has expressed concern that insufficient resources have been made available to these institutions in order to effectively monitor the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Committee has recommended that the State strengthen the role of the Parliamentary Commissioners, including by providing adequate human and financial resources, give appropriate weight to the Commissioners recommendations and consider the creation of a complaints and monitoring mechanism that is accessible to children.
