Summary: Southern Africa is thought to have two-
thirds of the world's 30.6 million
people living with HIV. Already 7.8
million children under the age of 15 in
sub-Saharan Africa have been orphaned
due to AIDS. This Comment explores the
scale of the epidemic, factors
promoting it and developmental impacts.
