GAMBIA: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in Gambia that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson
As of 2001 and Gambia's last report to the Committee on the Rights of the Child, the Department for Social Welfare was responsible for investigating individual complaints of violations of the rights of children. The Committee expressed concern, however, that the Office of the Ombudsman did not adequately cover issues relevant to children's rights and that the State had not established an independent monitoring mechanism capable of receiving and investigating individual complaints of violations of children's rights.
