Between November 1995 and February 1996, an unspecified
number of young girls working as apprentices in a garment
factory in Meknes (Morocco) were alledgedly dismissed from their
jobs in an abrupt fashion. These dismissals apparently coincided
with an investigation undertaken by Granada Television's World
in Action programme of the ethical conduct of the British
multinational company Marks & Spencer.
The International Working Group on Child Labour undertook a
case study to determine the impact that these dismissals had on
the lives of these young workers and their families. This study is
based on interviews and discussions with a sample of the girls.
The report Forgotten on the Pyama Trail reveals the need to
actively seek and implement more gentle and comprehensive
solutions to protect the best interest of working children. The
report is written by Fatima Badry Zalami, Nandana reddy,
Margaret A. Lynch and Clare Feinstein on behalf of the
International Working Group on Child Labour. Defence for
Children International and International Society for the
Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect jointly established the
International Working Group on Child Labour.
