ETHIOPIA: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in Ethiopia that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson

The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and Ombudsman institutions were established in 2000, and a Commissioner and an Ombudsperson were first appointed in 2004. The State reported to the Committee on the Rights of the Child in 2006 that the institutions began operations in 2005, but provided very limited information on their functioning. The Committee urged the State to ensure that the operations of its monitoring institutions are compatible with the Paris Principles, and that they can receive, monitor and investigate complaints from or on behalf of children in relation to alleged violations of their rights. The Committee also requested that the State provide the Committee with further information on the operations of its monitoring organisations.
