The Curse of Cotton: Central Asia's Destructive Monoculture

Summary: Central Asia's cotton industry fuels political
repression and entrenches poverty, expanding
the recruitment base for extremism. Millions of
rural poor work for little or no reward growing
and harvesting the crop; profits go to the
state or elites with strong political ties; and
the whole system depends on political
repression. Forced and child labour and other
abuses are common.
