Summary: This report compiles all mentions of children's rights in the Concluding Observations of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights.
Last reported: 10 – 24 November 2008 Delegation led by the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Justice, and Head of the Delegation of Nigeria The Commission expressed concern about: Violence against women and girls: the lack of concrete national legislation on gender based violence, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). The Commission sought further information on the status of legislation prohibiting Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) which according to the State Party has been adopted by various states of the Federation, as well as statistical data on the prevalence of FGM in all states of the Federation. It recommended enacting at the Federal level, legislation prohibiting FGM, violence and discriminatory practices against women (Paragraphs 23, and 30.c and e, 37). The high incidence of infant and maternal mortality, especially in the northern parts of the country. The Commission recommended enacting policies to address the situation, especially in the affected areas. (Paragraphs 24, 38). HIV and AIDS: The Commission requested information on whether the National HIV and AIDS Policy provided the necessary medical care to prevent mother to child transmission of HIV (Paragraph 34).
