Earthscan's summary of the publication
Children are by far the most committed age group on environmental
issues. All over the world, young people are becoming
enthusiastically involved in environmental issues, though often these
are superficial, distant calls to 'save the earth'.

Roger Hart writes with the conviction that all children can play a
central and lasting role in sustainable development if their
participation is taken seriously and if communities recognize their
developing competencies and unique strengths. Throughout, the book
emphasizes the importance of genuine participation. Children must be
involved in the definition of environmental problems and become
representative, critical voices within their communities. Moreover,
'the environment' should go beyond the standard 'green' focus of many
education programs to include such practical areas as the planning of
houses and the management of playgrounds.

Using detailed case studies from urban and rural, poor and middle-
class communities in both the developed and developing worlds, and
including photos, figures, tables and boxes, this book makes an
excellent guide to both the theory and practice of children's
participation. It introduces the organizing principles, successful
models, practical techniques and resources for involving young people
in environmental projects, with useful further reading and contact
addresses.

Children's Participation in Sustainable Development will be suitable
for environmentalists, voluntary sector organizations
and policy makers, as well as for teachers, youth workers and
community leaders working with children.
