Children's Ombudsperson

The National Commission for the Follow-up of the Convention on the Rights of the Child was established in 1993 to monitor the application of the Convention on the rights of the child; to assist in the application of the National Plan of Action for the Survival, Protection and Development of Children; and to coordinate the activities of associations, the authorities and non-governmental organisations on behalf of children. The Committee on the Rights of the Child, however, expressed concern in its Concluding Observations of 2000 at the insufficient monitoring of the implementation of the Convention and recommended that the State take steps to make the Commission fully independent and provide the body with sufficient resources to carry out its mandate.
