Summary: On 20 November, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on "Human rights and the administration of justice".
The resolution follows a recent report submitted by the Secretary-General to the General Assembly on human rights in the administration of justice, as well as the report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on the protection of human rights of juveniles deprived of their liberty and the joint report of the Office of the High Commissioner, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children on prevention of and responses to violence against children within the juvenile justice system. Both reports were submitted to the Human Rights Council's 21st session. Juvenile justice The resolution urges States to “ensure that, under their legislation and practice, neither capital punishment nor life imprisonment without the possibility of release, not corporal punishment is imposed for offences committed by persons under 18 years of age”.
