______________________________

YUVA works with street children, child
labourers , children of nomadic tribal
communities and children living in
slums and on pavements. YUVA runs
a 24
hour night shelter on space given by
the local municipal authorities. It
addresses children's needs such as
shelter, education, health, recreation
through a comprehensive and
integrated
programme. Counselling services,
savings, job placements for older
youth, vocational training and
personality development
programmes are
regular activities. YUVA is part of a
network of organisations in Mumbai
running phone-in crisis intervention
services. A mobile medical van
extends
care to children on the streets.
Education , recreation, and training
of "barefoot child doctors" is also
undertaken. Firmly believing in every
child's right to education YUVA has
community based campaigns to
enroll
children into schools and study
centres. Broader advocacy initiatives
concentrate on children's shelter
issues. Activities were held with
children to understand how they
view
housing and the inputs fed into the
Habitat ll Agenda. Active advocacy
with
local government has secured
spaces for
shelters for street children. Advocacy
also covers child abuse, police
harassment , administration of
juvenile
justice and child labour
