The SOS telephone – City of Rijeka is one of the oldest help line for victims of violence in Croatia. It is a non-governmental organisation strongly committed to combat every form of violence. Recognising the fact that violence is deeply rooted in society and the fact that it represents a violation of basic human rights, the SOS telephone – City of Rijeka enforces a variety of additional programmes in order to provide help and prevent violence, promoting everyone’s right to live in safety and to have a future without fear. The SOS telephone – City of Rijeka considers primary prevention of violence to be very important, therefore is constantly developing programmes for kindergardens, elementary schools, high schools and other educational institutions in order to prevent violence before it happens. Since 2008 our Organisation has been an active coalition member of WWSF in order to mark the World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse, a Day commemorated every 19 November in synergy with the anniversary of the International Day for the rights of the child (20 November). Since its founding, the role of the organisation has changed significantly. War in Croatia (1991 – 1995) marked the beginning of our activities. The vast majority of calls were closely connected with war and the activity of the organisation was exclusively related to listening by specially educated volunteers. Today the Organisation is run by trained staff and is expanding its activity including number of specialists: psychologists, psychotherapists, doctors and lawyers who provide all the necessary forms of help in our Counselling Centre.
