Activity:- Radio Programme - Child Rights. Target Group:- Parents; Teachers; Youth; Peer groups, children department; provincial administration and police. Response:- Overwhelmingly supported particulary in Nyambene and Tharaka Districts.
Reason:- The radio which primarily broadcasts in Ki-Meru, has it's core uadience base in Mt. Kenya region of the larger Meru. The region is the leading grower of ghat (Miraa) in East Africa but very little is ploughed into the welfare of children.Young boys and girls provide the bulk of labour in ghat farms:- harvesting, transporting and sale. FGM is a must for girls who attain the age of 14 - 17 years. After undergoing the ritual, these girls rarely continue with education as 90 per cent of them are married off to elderly but wealthy miraa farmers and businessmen as either 2rd, 3rd of even 6th wives.
Aims:-
(i) Raise awareness to our audience on child rights
(ii) Mobilise human resource against the vice
(iii) Unite our audience in fighting the vice
(iv) Thoroughly highlight recently enacted sexual offences act
(iv) Educate our audience how to seek use of DNA testing as basis for sewing together evidence of sexual offences and paternity disputes
(v) Pressurise the security arm of the goernment to ensure desks to handle children abuse cases and sexual offences are oparational 24 hours
(v) Encourage communities to establish community protection centres and safe schools for abused children or those likely to be abused.
