Cl@n Childlaw

AIMS:  By supporting and championing the rights of children and young people in areas of significant deprivation within Edinburgh and the Lothians, we aim:

• To deliver free legal advice and representation to children and young people in Edinburgh and the Lothians, who would otherwise have found it very difficult or impossible to access the legal help that they require.

• To deliver training on child law to professionals working with children

• To contribute to policy development through case work and by specific issues which arise from it.

ACTIVITIES:

• Actively to promote the legal rights of children and young people directly, and with partners, to children and young people and to help to ensure that their rights are enforced;

• To provide a user friendly, client-centred and accessible, face-to-face outreach legal representation and support service specifically and exclusively for children and young people;

• To work with children and young people throughout the legal process, enabling the caseworkers to understand their client’s needs better, the client to understand their rights and ensuring the best outcomes, both legal and personal, for each client.

Thereby enabling children and young people:

• to be fully heard and to have their issues properly addressed within a supportive environment;

• to be better able to understand and articulate their rights and issues;

• to experience wider benefits in relation to their general well being, family and wider social relationships, self esteem and empowerment.
