Activities ANPPCAN Regional Office conducts projects both at the national and continental levels. National Chapters (ANPPCAN has 21 national Chapters in Africa), however, implement national projects in countries of residence. In this way, projects of the Regional Office and that of national chapters often complement each other in child protection. Below is a brief description of the projects of the Regional Office. A) Activities at the National Level Child Labour Strives to avail appropriate development models for combating child labour in Kenya. The programme is currently targeting fourteen districts in Kenya, namely, Bondo, Busia, Homa-Bay, Kericho, Kiambu, Malindi, Makuyu-Maragwa, Mombasa, Muranga, Mumias-Butere, Nairobi, Siaya Suba and Teso. The programme aims at involving the communities in prevention of child labour and also in withdrawing children from work and supporting them for education Networking and Advocacy Carries out advocacy, networking, and creation of national chapters to address Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) issues in Africa. Child Rights and Child Protection Strives to create an avenue for a long-term joint action programme of Government Departments and Non-Governmental Organizations to deal with the issue of child abuse and neglect in the various forms that it manifests itself. The project is implemented by a Coalition on Child Rights and Child Protection in Kenya and is co-ordinated by ANPPCAN Regional Office. Community Organization Training (COT)
Strives to provide skills and appropriate attitudes to those working with slum communities while aiming at facilitating the empowerment and mobilization of the communities not only to address problems affecting them but also to involve them in protecting their children from all forms of abuses.
Research, Documentation and Information Does research, documents findings and disseminates information in order to initiate or strengthen programmes for children. Home Based Day Care Centres Benefits children aged 0-6 years in Korogocho informal settlement, in Nairobi, by providing them with early childhood education and care while their parents go out to work. Children are prevented from being exposed to incidences of abuse and finding their way into the streets. Childwatch Publishes Childwatch Magazine on quarterly basis. The newsletter is available on annual subscription of Ksh 500 in Kenya and US $ 20 outside Kenya. B) Activities at the Continental Level Children and Armed Conflict Increases awareness in Africa on the state of children in situations of armed conflict. Also aims at facilitating the enforcement of concrete policy measures to prevent the involvement of children in armed combat and to protect children who are already in situations of armed conflict. Exchange of Personnel Programme The ANPPCAN-Fredskorpset exchange of personnel programme takes place among ANPPCAN chapters in Africa and involves staff from a chapter being attached at another to work, learn and share experiences. The overall purpose of the exchange programme is to enhance the capacities currently available at Chapters and provide an opportunity to share experiences while marketing best practices available within ANPPCAN. Anti- Child Trafficking Programme Works to minimize and eventually eliminate child trafficking in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. It seeks to undertake action oriented studies on child trafficking in the four countries, enhance knowledge and guide interventions on child trafficking, increase the level of awareness among different groups and build the capacity of key actors, build and enhance networks and alliances to effectively contribute to the fight against child trafficking Promoting the Right of the Child to be protected from Violence Contributes to stopping of all forms of violence against children in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya and Somalia. The program works to enhance knowledge and the capacity of various actors in the four countries to respond to and minimize the occurrence of violence against children and also strengthen their operational capacity for effective advocacy and execution of laws against violence on children.
