UNITED KINGDOM: Child Protection Training Course with ChildHope

ChildHope is holding five training courses on Child Protection in collaboration with Marie Wernham of Child Rights Evaluation, Advice and Training Exchange. The organisers would like to receive expressions of interest for these courses to decide how many courses to run and when to hold them. The first course will take place in London in the last two weeks of October with subsequent courses to follow on from this date.

One-day Courses

1) How to Develop UK Child Protection Policies and Procedures

This course is aimed at UK and international agencies working in the international sphere. Participants will be working specifically with children, or may come into contact with children even if this is not the main focus of their work, and have limited experience of child protection (CP). They will be interested in developing their own child protection policies and procedures. The course will take them through exploring why CP policies and procedures are necessary and how to facilitate the development of CP policies and procedures. They will develop an action plan during the training, detailing how they could take child protection forward in their organisations and work.

2) Basic Training for Child Protection Officers in the UK

This course is for people who have taken on the role of Child Protection Officer in organisations. It will explore the tasks and responsibilities of a Child Protection Officer and provide practical guidance on this role. It also aims to share good practice on how to respond to situations and how to keep child protection alive within organisations.

3) A review of the implementation of UK Child Protection Policies and Procedures

This course is aimed at organisations that have already developed their child protection policies and procedures. It will enable the exchange of lessons learned from implementing policies and procedures, share good practice and identify the challenges faced in implementation and how to overcome these. It will look at different approaches to monitoring the implementation of child protection policies and procedures.

4) Introduction to developing child protection policies with overseas offices or partner organisations

This course offers an introduction to approaches that facilitate the development of child protection policies with overseas offices or partner organisations. It is based on approaches outlined in ChildHope’s Child Protection Policies and Procedures Toolkit (see www.childhope.org.uk/toolkit.php). The course will identify the preparatory work needed to introduce child protection and examine how the relationship between the UK agency and its partners may be affected. It will cover how a UK agency can support their partner in relation to the different elements of a child protection policy. It may also include an overview of abuse and child protection and how to undertake a risk analysis, depending on whether participants have attended course (1).

5) A review of the implementation of Child Protection Policies and Procedures in overseas organisations/ partner organisations

This course is aimed at learning from the implementation of CP policies and procedures by overseas offices or partners of UK NGOs. It will share learning on the challenges faced by overseas organisations in implementing their CP policies and procedures and in what ways UK agencies can support this process. This would involve participants undertaking a short piece of preparatory work to elicit experiences from their overseas partners.

Three-day Course

6) Training of Trainers for developing and supporting the implementation of CP policies with partners / overseas offices (participants will have completed the 1 day Introduction Course [4])

This TOT is for those facilitating training on child protection with overseas partners or offices. It will cover all stages of the ChildHope Child Protection Policies and Procedures Toolkit and explore how to facilitate the exercises. It will involve participants undertaking practice training sessions and developing a training agenda.
