A Guide for Young People
New York, 8 May The International Planned Parenthood
Federation and members of the International Sexual and
Reproductive Rights Coalition today marked the opening of United
Nations General Assembly Special Session on the Child with the
launch of a new guide: The Young Person's Guide to the UN
Convention on the Rights of a Child and Sexual and Reproductive
health.
The guide makes the links between the rights, as laid out in the
Convention, and sexual and reproductive rights - traditionally one
of the most controversial areas in UN discussions.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is the
most powerful legal instrument available to all children for the
protection and enforcement of their human rights. It has been
ratified by every country in the world, with the exception of USA
and Somalia.
By ratifying this instrument, national governments have
committed themselves to protecting and ensuring children's rights
and they have agreed to hold themselves accountable for this
commitment before the international community. Despite this,
there has been little progress in the protection and promotion of
adolescent sexual and reproductive health.
Written for young people, in a clear, youth-friendly language, the
guide aims to highlight specific links between this legally binding
international instrument and sexual and reproductive health.
IPPF Director General Designate Steven Sinding said:
"This guide empowers and informs young people about their
entitlements in relation to sexual and reproductive health. I hope
that activists working in the area of adolescent reproductive
health will find it a useful tool for furthering their efforts in
securing these fundamental rights."
