UKRAINE: Call for establishing children's rights ombudsperson

[2 June 2011] - In Ukraine, it is expedient to establish an institution of the Ombudsman for Children. This opinion has been expressed by Anatoly Zabolotny, the Director of Rinat Akhmetov's Foundation for Development of Ukraine at a press conference called "The Protection of Children's Rights through the Prism of an Administrative Reform".

Such an institution could take over the function of monitoring children's rights, obtain the right of legislative initiative to protect the rights of minors. It is also important at the state level to have a defender who would defend the property rights of orphans. "Very often after leaving the orphanage it turns out that the child is deprived of his legitimate housing," Zabolotny explained. Zabolotny said that the Foundation for Development of Ukraine since 2008 has been implementing a project entitled "Development of Family Forms of Upbringing" that has helped two thousand orphans find families.
