TURKMENISTAN: Government partners UNICEF to step up efforts in their implementation of the CRC

Summary: UN Children's Fund - UNICEF is providing technical support to the Turkmen government to work out a report on implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

UNICEF conducted a workshop in Turkmenistan to work out a qualitative report for members of the interministerial commission for the implementation of Turkmenistan's international commitments on human rights.

Representatives of the commission, who will work out a report on implementation of articles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, familiarized with the activity of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, studied the reporting guidelines in details and reviewed the basic principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

They also gained knowledge on how to properly and efficiently provide answers to the recommendations voiced in the concluding observations of the Committee on the Rights of the Child on the previous report of Turkmenistan.

The recommendations provided by the Committee in 2006, calls on the Turkmen government to focus efforts on issues of family and alternative care, juvenile justice, child abuse prevention, health and welfare, education, children with disabilities and special protection measures.

The workshop presented an opportunity for members of the committee to discuss the preparation of a report concerning the basic measures for the implementation of the Convention, such as legislation, coordination, independent monitoring, data collection, training and dissemination of report on implementation of articles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and cooperation with civil society.

According to the UN report, the provision of the first periodic report on the Optional Protocol to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child concerning participation of children in Armed Conflicts and the Optional Protocol to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography were discussed at the workshop.
